Joan Baez, Jollyship the Whiz Bang, Reverend Billy and the Church of Life After Shopping Gospel Choir and other special musical guests and speakers (to be announced) will headline a benefit concert in support of New York City’s Green Party Mayoral Candidate, Reverend Billy at the Highline Ballroom on Monday, July 27th, 2009 from 6-11pm EST.Reverend Billy Talen, celebrated internationally for his radical community defense stunning revial performances, is NYC’s lone voice of the neighborhoods in the face of Michael Bloomberg’s multi-million dollar campaign for a third term. ReverendBilly will perform live with The Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir, his 36-member entourage that starred in the feature-length documentary: What Would Jesus Buy?, produced by Super-Size Me director Morgan Spurlock.

Folk singer Joan Baez is a musical force of nature whose influence is incalculable and who has been an active voice for social justice and human rights for over fifty years. Baez will be joined by her band and other special guests including speakers from New York’s political arena and other special guest performance artists.

The theme of the evening revolves around Reverend Billy’s ‘500 Neighborhoods’ initiative: the rejuvenation of New York’s communities and neighborhoods through social, ecological and economic justice and ending the constant threat of gentrification.

Reverend Billy, also known as Billy Talen, is a self-ordained preacher, community organizer and performance artist who has worked for more than a decade to keep New York’s diverse neighborhoods healthy, safe and vibrant. He has worked with grassroots organizations to defend public space, free speech under the 1st Amendment, and the New Yorker’s right to earn an honest, independent living.
