NY Daily News Reviews “The Caller”

More Movie Reviews ‘Gomorrah,’ ‘The Caller’

2 stars

A businessman hires a private eye to follow him. With Frank Langella, Elliott Gould. At the Quad (1:32). Not rated.

Frank Langella — Oscar-nominated for “Frost/Nixon” and enjoying a run of stage triumphs — is now a reliable decoder of latemiddleage melancholia. In “The Caller,” he’s a tired, whistleblowing energy company exec who hires a P.I. (Elliott Gould) to trail him in case he’s murdered. However, the “eye” doesn’t know his client and subject are the same. Director Richard Ledes lays too many subplots for his quietly compelling drama to wrap up, but Gould is appealingly schlumpfy, and Langella has a stately sadness that speaks volumes. — Joe Neumaier
