STEP ASIDE ANTONIO BANDERAS! MOVE OVER DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS! MAKE WAY FOR INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR ALAIN DELON, WHO LEAVES THE LEGENDARY MARK OF ‘Z’ AS THE GREATEST SWASHBUCKLER TO SLASH HIS WAY ACROSS THE SILVER SCREEN!
International superstar Alain Delon stars as the legendary black-clad masked outlaw hero who defends the weak and innocent against tyranny in ZORRO, the zesty 1975 film version of the classic tale. The secret identity of a nobleman living in the Spanish colonial era of the late 1900s who dons his mask and wields his sword in the pursuit of liberty and freedom, Zorro has been a staple of books, films, comics and television for nearly 100 years. And now, Alain Delon’s inimitable rendition of the legendary swashbuckler who leaves a slash of a letter “Z” in his wake returns in the Blu-ray and DVD release of ZORRO.
Filled with action, adventure and fun that’s suitable for the entire family, ZORRO finds nobleman Diego de la Vega (Alain Delon) masquerading as the new governor of a territory in Latin America that’s ruled by the cruel Colonel Huerta (Stanley Baker) and his soldiers. Disturbed by the state of tyranny in his province, Diego secretly transforms into Zorro, joining forces with the monk Brother Francisco (Giampiero Albertini) and the beautiful aristocrat Hortensia (Ottavia Piccolo) in a fight against Huerta for all that is good for the oppressed people of the land.
Somerville House will release ZORRO for the first very time on Blu-ray and DVD on November 20 (via Entertainment One) for the suggested retail price of $24.98 and $19.98, respectively. As the original copyright holder, Somerville House finally brings the official, complete English-language version of this 1975 international production of ZORRO (which played theatrically across the U.S.) to Blu-ray and DVD in a digitally re-mastered, gorgeously restored, widescreen edition.
ZORRO is one of the most unique, colorful and action-filled films in the renowned swordsman’s international canon. The only Zorro film to take place in South America rather the traditional California or Mexico locales with which Zorro is most closely associated, ZORRO is directed by prolific Italian filmmaker Duccio Tessari, who is best known for his work on Sergio Leone’s classic A Fistful of Dollars and his own energetic action-adventure film Kiss Kiss…Bang Bang. To that end, ZORRO is filled with cinematic elements—enigmatic heroes, nefarious villains, dusty landscapes, furious action and a quest for vengeance—that are usually associated with spaghetti westerns and continental adventure fare. But ZORRO bursts through such genre-classifications with its family-friendly story, distinct style and unending action, which includes a climactic duel that runs more than 10 minutes and must be seen to be believed!
Of course, Zorro’s portrayal by the legendary Alain Delon of Purple Noon, The Leopard, L’eclissse and Rocco and His Brothers fame launches ZORRO through the roof. Taking on a leading man role that been played by everyone from Douglas Fairbanks and Tyrone Power to Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins and even George Hamilton (!), Delon truly makes Zorro his own, whether he’s raising his sword to defend the defenseless or sweeping his leading lady into his arms for romance.
